Security concerns have been raised for the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) after unidentified gunmen allegedly broke into the off-campus student houses in Gandu, which is close to the university’s permanent location in Nasarawa State.

Students were terrified after the early Tuesday morning event, which prompted calls for stronger security protocols.

The assailants stole goods from students, including cash, phones, laptops, and other items, while breaking into roughly three lodges.

The victims, who attested to the incident, voiced worry about the increase in crime in Gandu, a neighbourhood home to many university employees and students.

One of the victims, Isa, emphasised the need for more security in Gandu and the surrounding districts, saying that there has been a rise in crime in the area, leaving residents and students open to armed robberies and kidnappings.

Naomi, a different victim, described how the attackers stormed into their rooms at around three in the morning and took phones and other personal items.

According to Obasanjo News24, security officials have declared intentions to install “Stop and Search” sites throughout the state’s tertiary institutions in response to the growing security concerns surrounding them.

The decision was taken at a broader security forum where stakeholders addressed ways to combat the rising threat of banditry and kidnappings in Nasarawa State at the Government House in Lafia.

It is anticipated that the installation of “Stop and Search” locations will improve security measures and discourage illegal activity within and around educational facilities.
