Understanding Nigeria’s Current State of Disgrace and International Ridicule – TY Danjuma
During his speech at the 2024 Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival in Taraba State, former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retd.), expressed his deep concern over the continuous killings and kidnappings in Nigeria, stating that it has brought shame and disgrace to the country on a global scale.
As the chairman of the event, the elder statesman lamented that Nigeria has unfortunately become a battleground and a source of absurdity, leaving a bitter impression on people worldwide.
Danjuma called upon Nigerians to restore the nation’s reputation at the international level. He emphasized the need for peace and order in Taraba and Nigeria as a whole, if the festival is to be recognized and celebrated by foreign visitors.
The retired military general warned of the impending danger and stressed that no rational foreign individual would be willing to partake in Nigeria’s festivities if the country continues to witness internal conflicts, violence, and unsafe conditions for its citizens.
He expressed his disappointment, stating that Nigeria has become a laughing stock in the eyes of the world, with its people fighting against each other. Danjuma urged his fellow countrymen to cease the violence, ensure the safety of their communities and roads, and put an end to kidnapping.
In conclusion, Danjuma called for a renewed commitment to peace and harmony, emphasizing the importance of unity among Nigerians. He urged everyone to reflect on their identity as a nation and the strength that lies in their collective unity. Danjuma reiterated that for the festival to truly become an international event, Nigeria must prioritize peace and security within its borders.
During his address, Dr Agbu Kefas, the Governor of Taraba State, emphasized his administration’s unwavering dedication to upholding justice and fostering peace within the state. He stressed the importance of showcasing Taraba’s abundant potential to the world, recognizing it as a valuable asset to the nation.
Kefas also emphasized the need to harness this potential fully, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals residing in Taraba. Similarly, Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State expressed his support for the cultural festival and pledged the commitment of the Adamawa state government to its success.
He highlighted the festival’s significance in promoting social-political, economic, and peaceful coexistence between the people of Taraba and Adamawa states.
