The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has provided an explanation for the federal government’s decision to implement new requirements for obtaining or renewing international passports. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that these new conditions were put in place to prevent non-citizens from acquiring Nigerian passports.
He stated that the passport is a security document exclusively meant for Nigerian citizens and that foreigners have taken advantage of the inefficiencies in the previous system. Despite acknowledging the challenges faced by new passport applicants, the Minister assured the public that there will be an improved process in the coming weeks.
The new conditions, which include the provision of a citizenship certificate, date of birth certificate, and the National Identification Number (NIN), are crucial for verifying the true citizenship of applicants. Additionally, Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the introduction of this new process aims to simplify the passport acquisition process for Nigerians by facilitating speedy online application, production, and collection.
He expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the new system, stating that the recorded hiccups account for only 4 percent and that significant improvements will be made in the next one or two weeks, leading to a near-perfect system.
The Minister emphasized the need for an improved process in obtaining passports, highlighting the importance of passports as security documents.
The introduction of a new system has resulted in enhanced accessibility, transparency, and efficiency. In addition, the Minister discussed plans for implementing contactless biometrics in passport renewal, demonstrating the government’s dedication to creating a brighter future for Nigerians both at home and abroad.
Regarding the cost of the 5-year passport, the Minister acknowledged that it has changed, but clarified that it was determined based on the cost of the 10-year passport. The Minister explained that the aim is to establish a future where things are done in a more efficient manner, and the adjustment in price reflects this objective.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the overall state of affairs in the country.
