According to Matthew Hassan Kukah, bishop of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Nigeria’s worst corruption period occurred under the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
During a lecture on Monday in Ado Ekiti honoring the founding president of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, who was called to the bar 60 years ago, Kukah made the remark.
“The future of constitutional democracy in Nigeria: Imperative of a new constitutional order,” was the lecture’s title.
The cleric explained that the tendency did not begin under Buhari, but he continued to claim that corruption grew worse while the ex-President was in office.
“We have witnessed Nigeria’s worst period of corruption. My friend here, Femi Falana, will talk about that since he has written a number of pieces discussing what occurred under the Buhari administration.
“They were not the ones who caused corruption, but I think in the last administration, we saw the ugliest phase of corruption whether in moral terms, financial terms, and other terms,” he claimed.
In addition, Kukah said in his presentation that the court, particularly the Supreme Court, needs more individuals of integrity.
The Bishop maintained that sustaining democratic principles demanded selfless devotion and should not be sentimentally driven to promote development while urging the Federal Government to eschew sentiments throughout the country’s democratic transition.
The cleric also expressed disapproval of politicians who restricted development to their own cities, stating that such behavior does not reflect well on the country’s democracy.
