Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General, is apprehensive about the prospect of increased conflict in the Middle East that could spread further.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of UN, has appealed for an end to assaults on civilians and civilian facilities. He has requested all parties to exhibit self-control after a significant Israeli aerial attack targeted Hodeidah – a Yemeni port city- last Saturday.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, they launched an air raid as a retaliatory measure against Yemeni Houthi attacks on civilian vessels connected with Israelis and long-range missile and drone strikes targeting Israel.

At least three individuals were killed and approximately 87 others sustained injuries in the assault on Hodeidah, as per a report by al-Masirah TV owned by the Houthis. The Ministry of Health that governs areas controlled under Houthi rule in Yemen was cited for this information early Sunday.

According to a statement from his spokesperson posted on the UN website, Guterres has expressed significant worry about the reports of airstrikes that took place earlier today in and around Yemen’s port of Hodeidah.

As per the preliminary reports, several individuals have lost their lives and more than 80 people are wounded in this assault. Moreover, extensive destruction has been inflicted upon civil infrastructure. The Secretary-General urges all concerned parties to steer clear of any acts that could potentially endanger civilians or cause harm to civilian structures as stated by the announcement.

The note adds that Guterres continues to urge all parties involved in the region to exercise maximum restraint as he is deeply concerned about the possibility of things getting worse.

The Houthis were accused by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of using the port in Hodeidah as a means to receive weapon deliveries from Iran. Both West Jerusalem and its main adversary engaged in airstrikes earlier this year, creating concerns for an enlarged escalation within the Middle East region.

Furthermore, Netanyahu brought up the drone attack that occurred in Tel Aviv recently resulting in one fatality and at least ten injuries. The Houthis took credit for this incident asserting their latest drone has the ability to “circumvent the foe’s interception mechanisms.”

Since October, the Houthis – a Shia Islamist faction that has taken control of much of war-torn Yemen – have been targeting commercial shipping affiliated with Israel in the Red Sea. The group states they will continue these attacks as long as Israeli military operations against Gaza persist.
