UN Extends Peacekeeping Mission in DRC Through 2025

The United Nations has extended its peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) until 2025, focusing on stabilizing the region and addressing ongoing conflicts.

The United Nations Security Council has decided to extend the mandate of a long-standing U.N. peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo for an additional year, following further postponements of a planned withdrawal from the eastern provinces.

The Congolese government has earlier advocated for the departure of MONUSCO, but a communication to the Security Council from Congo’s mission to the United Nations in New York indicates that Kinshasa requested an extension of the operation.

The extension ensures that nearly 11,000 peacekeepers will remain deployed until at least December 2025.
