Russia attacked Ukraine early on Sunday, mostly striking the southern sections of the Odesa area and attacking an agricultural plant there, the Ukrainian Air Forces reported on the Telegram messaging app.
According to the Air Force, six drones and six cruise missiles built in Iran by Russia were shot down by Ukrainian forces before they could reach their target.
The situation in Odesa and its ports has drawn the attention of grain markets, as Kyiv reported on Saturday that two cargo ships had arrived there to make use of a temporary passageway to enter Black Sea ports and load grain for African and Asian markets.
The Air Force stated that fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, and other offensive methods were used to fend off the aerial assault.
In the eastern portion of the area, in the Berezivskiy district, a grain silo and agricultural fields were damaged, according to Odesa governor Oleh Kiper’s Telegram post.
Thankfully, there weren’t any casualties, Kiper said.
The report could not be independently verified by Reuters, and Russia made no immediate comments.
Air raid warnings were in effect across the entirety of Ukraine for several hours.
In order to release ships stuck in its ports since the war’s start in February 2022 and avoid a de facto blockade after Russia reneged on a promise to allow Kyiv to transport food, Ukraine last month proposed a “humanitarian corridor” in the Black Sea.
