The German Bundesliga has overtaken the English Premier League in the race for an additional Champions League spot, following the eliminations of Arsenal and Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Starting from next season, the reformatted edition of the Champions League will grant an extra group-stage place to the two countries with the highest coefficient.
Each win in the competition earns two coefficient points, a draw earns one, and a defeat earns zero. Additionally, bonus points are awarded for reaching certain stages.

Prior to this week’s matches, English clubs were slightly ahead of their German counterparts, but Bayern Munich’s victory over Arsenal and Real Madrid’s elimination of Manchester City shifted the balance in Germany’s favor.
Borussia Dortmund’s triumph over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday further solidified Germany’s lead over England in terms of coefficient points.
Now, England will be relying on West Ham and Liverpool to produce miraculous comebacks against Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta on Thursday night in order to have any chance of catching up to Germany.
