Nigeria’s U-17 Flamingos delivered an impressive performance, defeating New Zealand in a dominant four-goal display to begin their campaign in the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria dominated New Zealand with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday, setting the stage for their campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The relentless Flamingos dominated the first half, scoring three times to make significant progress toward advancing to the next phase of the competition in the Dominican Republic.
Shakira Moshood opened the scoring within just two minutes of the Group A match. With impressive offensive maneuvers from the Nigerians, the Flamingos soared to a 3-0 lead by minute 30, thanks to goals from Taiwo Adegoke and Fairdat Abdulwahab.
At the start of the second half, Taiwo Afolabi scored another goal for the Flamingos, increasing their lead to 4-0.
However, the Kiwis, who seldom posed a threat to Nigeria’s goal, swiftly responded by scoring and bringing the score to 4-1.
Although the West African team had multiple opportunities to extend their lead, ineffective finishing kept Coach Bankole Olowookere’s players from increasing the score.
Following the victory, Nigeria will now focus on facing Ecuador and the Dominican Republic in their second and third matches respectively.
They are scheduled to face Ecuador on Saturday, October 19th, followed by a match against the hosts on Tuesday, October 22nd.
In the last edition of the competition, the Flamingos achieved their highest placement ever by finishing third.
