Two Officers Killed, Three Injured in Abuja Clash Between Shiites and Police

A violent clash between Shiite protesters and police in Abuja results in the deaths of two officers and leaves three others injured, escalating tensions in the capital city.

A confrontation between police operatives and members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also called Shiites, in Abuja’s Wuse locality has resulted in the death of two police officers and left three more unconscious.

Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command verified Sunday’s assault and denounced the group for wrecking three of their patrolling cars. She labeled it as unprovoked aggression.

At Wuse Junction by a traffic light, members of the IMN reportedly assaulted Nigeria Police Force personnel attached to the FCT command as per Adeh.

The FCT police force has verified an abrupt assault by the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly referred to as the “Shi’ite” group. The attack occurred on some law enforcement personnel stationed at Wuse Junction near a traffic signal without any incitation from their part, resulting in two casualties among them, while three were left incapacitated and admitted to hospital. Additionally, IMN set ablaze three Police patrol automobiles during this incident.

The police professional also stated that they carried machetes, homemade explosive devices (bombs made from bottles filled with kerosene), and blades.

As stated in the statement, the prohibited group assaulted the police checkpoint without any provocation. They used machetes, knives and improvised explosive devices (bombs made locally using kerosene-filled bottles).

The attack was condemned by the FCT Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh in immediate response to the incident.

The CP promised to ensure that all those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice, taking into account the fact that multiple arrests had already been made.

As per the report, normalcy has been reinstated in the vicinity by police personnel and thus, the situation is now under control.

CP Benneth C. Igweh, the Commissioner of Police FCT, condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers, despite several arrests being made.

According to the police spokesperson, he assures that those implicated will be held accountable and that the situation is currently managed with tranquility regained.

Furthermore, it was stated that the FCT Police Command will update the public on any additional developments at an appropriate time.
