Tunisia’s presidential election sees citizens heading to the polls, but opposition parties are calling for a boycott, casting doubts on the election’s outcome and credibility.

Today, Tunisians are heading to the polls for the country’s presidential election, which the opposition has criticized as neither free nor fair.

President Kais Saied is pursuing a second term in office, facing criticism for allegedly attempting to reduce the number of candidates opposing him.

Only two additional candidates were approved by the electoral commission to compete against Saied, while the remaining individuals are either incarcerated or disqualified from appearing on the ballot.

Elected in 2019 with strong public backing, Saied promised to address the country’s economic issues.

However, criticism directed at him has increased since then.

After gaining power, Saied dismissed the prime minister and suspended parliament, amending the constitution to strengthen his authority.

Several of Saied’s critics, such as lawyers, journalists, and activists, have been arrested by authorities. They are facing charges under an anti-fake news law that many observers believe is intended to suppress dissenting voices.

With the opposition urging a boycott of the election, this year’s turnout is uncertain. Nearly 10 million Tunisians are eligible to vote.
