The proposed indefinite strike by the organising workforce was unabated, according to the Trade Union Congress (TUC), who made this assertion on Wednesday.
According to OBASANJO NEWS24, on Tuesday, the TUC and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, announced that the nation’s economy would shut down starting on October 3 in order to further press their demands on the Federal Government.
In order to lessen the misery brought on by the elimination of gasoline subsidies, the government is being urged by the organised labour to adopt measures.
Meetings between the government and the unions have often come to a standstill.
TUC President Festus Osifo said that the strike is the last option in a statement to Arise TV on Wednesday. He insisted that all other options had been exhausted by organised labour in pursuing its objectives.
Osifo claims President Bola Tinubu has had ample time to develop palliatives that will lessen the impact of the subsidy termination.
Strikes are always a last resort for us, so that’s why we started out on this arduous trip, he declared. The removal of the fuel subsidy occurred roughly four months ago.
“Four months is adequate time for them to have designed a framework for the road forward, for any government that cares about the situation of the people.
“In response to the House of Representatives’ request that we exercise patience, we previously met with the Senate President, who made a commitment to follow through on his pledge to schedule a meeting with the President and report back to us within a week. However, we have not heard from him as of yet.
“We regret taking this final course of action because we have used all of our available resources.”
