Former US President Donald Trump has announced a groundbreaking $500 billion AI project, ‘Stargate,’ aimed at advancing artificial intelligence and securing America’s leadership in the tech race.

U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed a new initiative aimed at investing up to $500 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Unveiled on Tuesday, Project Stargate is a joint effort involving US technology leaders OpenAI and Oracle, alongside the Japanese investment firm SoftBank.

Trump introduced Stargate alongside the leaders of the three primary corporate partners, who have committed $100 billion in investment, with plans for an additional $400 billion over the next four years.

He referred to the project as a “monumental undertaking” and a powerful statement of confidence in America’s potential under new presidential leadership, which will secure U.S. dominance in the AI technology race against China and other competitors.

Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison announced that the initial Stargate data centers are currently being built in Texas. There are plans for up to 20 centers, each covering 500,000 square feet (46,000 square meters), designed to meet the substantial computational requirements of AI systems. Trump indicated that this initiative could generate over 100,000 jobs nationwide in the United States.

OpenAI, the developer behind the widely acclaimed AI model ChatGPT, provided more details in a statement and identified Arm, Microsoft, and NVIDIA as “key initial technology partners.”

In 2023, The Information reported that Microsoft and OpenAI were working together on an AI supercomputer named ‘Stargate,’ with an estimated cost of $100 billion. It remains uncertain if this project is related to the new Stargate initiative announced by Trump.

OpenAI, along with its partners, expressed their goal to “build and develop AI—specifically AGI—for the benefit of all humanity,” where AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) describes a form of AI that has not yet been realized, which can perform an array of tasks beyond the capabilities of today’s specialized models. Technology specialists have cautioned that while this innovation holds significant transformative promise, it may also present risks to human civilization.

Upon assuming office on Monday, Trump rescinded an executive order issued by former President Joe Biden in 2023 that sought to address AI risks.
