Former President Trump appoints Elon Musk to lead a new department focused on government efficiency, aiming to streamline operations and drive innovation.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump revealed that Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy would head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency. This non-governmental agency aims to reduce federal waste and optimize operations.
Musk and Ramaswamy are set to work alongside the Office of Management and Budget, aiming to implement reforms with an entrepreneurial mindset in government operations.

Musk, who has been an advocate for the agency informally called “Doge” in reference to Dogecoin, intends to make all actions publicly accessible for transparency. This will include a leaderboard showcasing instances of inefficient tax dollar spending. Ramaswamy voiced his support for this initiative on social media platforms.
As they are not government employees, Musk and Ramaswamy do not need to adhere to federal disclosure requirements. Their goal is to finish their work by July 4, 2026. Trump contemplates a leaner, more efficient government as a present for the country’s 250th anniversary.
Musk, a proponent of reducing government spending by $2 trillion, has elicited mixed responses. Supporters argue that his involvement could lead to significant change, whereas critics contend that his businesses often conflict with regulations he might now aim to alter.
