U.S. President Donald Trump says he has communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict, sparking global reactions.
According to the New York Post, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone about the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin has not yet responded to this claim.
The US president, who has consistently promised to quickly resolve the Ukraine conflict, shared his comments during an interview with the newspaper on Air Force One on Friday. However, these remarks were only published the following day. The NY Post, meanwhile, did not include any quotes from Trump’s alleged phone call in its interview.
When questioned about the frequency of his interactions with Putin, he remarked, “I’d rather not disclose that.” The US president expressed to the newspaper that he believed his counterpart desired an end to the conflict. “He wants people to stop dying,” Trump stated. “All those deceased individuals—young, beautiful lives lost like your own kids—a staggering two million—for absolutely no reason.”
It is uncertain which data he used to derive the specific figure and what timeframe he was referencing.
As reported by the NY Post, he made his remarks alongside National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. During his address to him, he emphasized, “Let’s get these meetings going. They want to meet. Every day people are dying,” according to the report.
Trump has consistently expressed his desire to meet with Putin to address the resolution of the Ukraine crisis. Moscow, in turn, has shown willingness for dialogue. On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that there have been interactions “between individual departments” of Russia and the US, noting that these contacts have recently become more frequent, although he did not offer additional specifics.
Trump mentioned that he “always had a good relationship with Putin,” and claimed that if he were president in 2022, he would have prevented the Ukraine conflict entirely. He has also blamed his successor, Joe Biden, for allowing hostilities to occur.
Although the US president has not disclosed his peace plan publicly, reports suggest that it includes freezing the conflict at its current front line, creating a demilitarized zone monitored by European troops, and postponing Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Russia has dismissed the possibility of freezing the conflict, emphasizing that any potential resolution must acknowledge the “territorial reality on the ground” and require Kiev to commit to permanent neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.
