A truck crash into a TCN facility in Kano has caused a major blackout, collapsing a transmission tower.
The North-West region is currently experiencing widescale power outages due to a transmission tower owned by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) collapsing as a result of a truck accident in Gunduwawa, Gezawa Local Government Area within Kano State.
On Sunday, an incident transpired where a trailer truck transporting a container collided with tower T16 on the Kano-Hadejia 132 KV Transmission Line. The disastrous impact broke two legs of the structure and led to its collapse, resulting in power disruptions.
Approximately 16.6 megawatts of power were lost as a result of the transmission line tripping caused by the tower collapse, according to comments made by TCN spokeswoman Ndidi Mbah.

The trial closure of the line was unsuccessful, leading to an immediate dispatch of a patrol team that uncovered the full extent of the damage.
A nearby residential building and container were also affected by the fallen tower. Fortunately, no casualties were reported; however, power supply to numerous local government areas in Jigawa and Yobe states was severely impacted including Hadejia, Gumel, Gagarawa, Nguru,Mallammadori,Birniwa,Kafin-Hausa,Auyo,Guri,Kaugama,Taura,Garki,Maigatari,Babura Kirikasamma,and Machina.
The damaged tower reconstruction has been assigned to a contractor, slated to begin work on Tuesday. The Gezawa Divisional Police Station was notified of the accident by TCN and detained the driver.
Efforts to restore the damaged tower, build a new one and bring back electricity supply to impacted regions are currently in progress. The completion of these repairs will enable Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to recommence providing power services to their clientele.
