Truck brake failure results in one death in Onitsha
An officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that a middle-aged female pedestrian was killed on Thursday evening along the Ezeiweka axis of the Onitsha-Owerri Road by a 40-foot caravan with a defective brake system.
Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, the FRSC’s Sector Commander in Anambra, confirmed the event to NAN on Friday in Awka.
Eyewitnesses said that the caravan was parked while the contents of its container were being unloaded when, all of a sudden, it rolled away without the driver inside. It struck the woman, trapping her.
“The trapped victim was already dead when the FRSC rescue team from Upper-Iweka Outpost and the Awada Police squad attempted to hire a crane to lift the 40-foot container.
The Awda Police Division is working to apprehend the trailer’s runaway driver.
“And as of this morning, we are still making efforts to clear the obstruction and ensure free traffic flow,” he added.
The sector commander expressed sympathy to the deceased’s relatives and urged drivers against breaking traffic laws.
To prevent this kind of disaster, follow the minimum safety requirements and keep your vehicles maintained regularly.
“Drive to save your life and the lives of others on the road,” he said.
