Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu has slashed state-mandated bus and rail prices by twenty-five percent.
Recall that Sanwo-Olu’s recent 50% fare decrease in transit was stopped by the state administration in an effort to lessen the impact of the removal of petrol subsidies.
With effect from August 2, the governor lowered the rates for public transport provided by Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) and the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) by 50% on July 31.
However, LAMATA announced that in response to requests for the reinstatement of the 50% rebate, Sanwo-Olu has ordered the execution of a 25% discount starting on Tuesday in a statement signed by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the implementation of a 25 percent discount beginning Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in response to calls for the reinstatement of the 50 percent rebate on fare for regulated bus and rail transport,” the statement said.
“The Governor has prolonged the passenger fare cut by 25% across the regulated bus and rail transport services until another review is published in response to requests to him.
“The diesel pump price increased by approximately 50% within the three-month rebate period, from N867 in August 2023 to N1,300 in November 2023,” the statement continued.
