Victor Osimhen was passed over by Zamalek, an Egyptian club, in 2015, according to former Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke.

At the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, Osimhen competed for Amuneke and won the Golden Boot with 10 goals.

At the time, Amuneke brought up Osimhen’s name to his previous team, but the forward was passed over and signed with the German team VFL Wolfsburg instead.

Amuneke told MBC Masr, “I don’t want to go into too much detail about the matter of offering Osimhen to Zamalek.”
“I’ve always supported Zamalek, and I’ll follow any talented player I come across. A challenge we encounter in Africa is the timidity with which we provide young players opportunities.

“Even if the younger generation in Africa is the future’s brightest stars, we constantly search for the prepared player.

“When I mentioned Osimhen’s name to the Zamalek staff, their response was, ‘We’re going to watch him,’ but nothing really happened.”
The 25-year-old had a rough stint at Wolfsburg, going on loan to a few different teams before joining Lille of Ligue 1.
The striker moved to Napoli after playing one season at Lille.

Last season, Osimhen assisted Napoli in winning the Serie A championship for the first time in more than thirty years.

At the CAF Awards 2023 in December of last year, he was named Africa’s Best Player.
