A rice distribution event turned tragic as a stampede reportedly claimed multiple lives. Authorities are investigating the incident.
On Saturday morning, tragedy hit the Okija community in Anambra State when a stampede occurred at a rice distribution event, resulting in an unspecified number of residents losing their lives.
The majority of the victims were women, as depicted in various social media videos showing lifeless bodies strewn across the ground following the incident. Reports indicate that some survivors have been transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary for the governor of Anambra State, confirmed the event and mentioned that the state government is actively monitoring the situation.
This tragic event follows closely on the heels of a similar calamity in Ibadan, Oyo State, where more than 35 individuals, primarily children, lost their lives during a stampede at a carnival.
This recent event heightens concerns regarding crowd management and safety at public gatherings, particularly during the distribution of essential items in light of the country’s economic challenges.
