A roof collapse at a train station in Novi Sad, Serbia, has resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people. President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed this tragic incident during his address to the nation on Friday.

The cause of the collapse remains undetermined. The Serbian leader emphasized that everyone responsible for the incident will be held accountable.

At approximately 12:00 noon local time (11:00 GMT) on Friday, the roof collapsed. Surveillance camera footage captures people entering and exiting the building and sitting on benches moments before the concrete canopy unexpectedly caved in, trapping them beneath it.

According to local media reports, 30 people sustained injuries. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated on Friday that at least three of them were rescued and hospitalized with serious injuries.

The government has announced that Saturday will be a day of mourning for the victims of the tragedy. Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his condolences to his Serbian counterpart.

Cleanup and rescue operations are in progress.

Video footage reveals many emergency workers and medical technicians present at the scene, alongside police officers patrolling the area. Cranes are visible being employed to clear debris and remove sections of the collapsed roof.

The railway station building was renovated in 2021 and once more this year prior to its official reopening in July. According to Vucic, the canopy of the station, originally constructed in 1964, remained untouched by these recent renovations.
