A tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in the Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State claimed seventy-seven lives.

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the death toll in a phone conversation with OBASANJONEWS.

Baba-Arah reported that 25 injured individuals were promptly transported to different hospitals in Suleja, Wuse, and surrounding healthcare centers for immediate medical care.

After the incident, the Niger State Government instructed that vehicles from the Maje axis are prohibited from crossing the Dikko Bridge.

Governor Umaru Bago issued the directive during his visit to the explosion site near Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State.

The Governor criticized the carelessness of certain drivers and advised them to proceed under the bridge before making a proper U-turn.

He instructed the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps to set up a detachment in the area for enforcing the directive and urged relevant transport unions to collaborate with them.

Governor Bago referred to the tanker explosion as a tragic event, expressing gratitude that it did not affect the nearby communities.

He urged the Federal Government to speed up efforts to complete the Minna-Suleja Road, as delays in the project are leading to ongoing loss of lives.

The governor expressed gratitude to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, fire service, and other organizations involved in evacuating victims.

He mentioned that doctors from hospitals in Minna will be reassigned to help treat injured patients who are currently receiving care at Suleja General Hospital.

The disaster at Dikko Junction underscores the serious risks associated with fuel tankers on Nigerian roads. In response, many residents are urging for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to avert future tragedies.

As the community mourns, investigations are in progress to pinpoint the exact cause of the explosion. Authorities are considering both mechanical failure and human error as potential factors.
