The tragic incident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos early Saturday morning resulted in the loss of one life. The collision involved a Mini Truck with the registration number MUS 489 XS and a Toyota Camry with the plate KRD 470 JD. Initial investigations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) revealed that the accident was caused by speeding in heavy rain.
In a statement issued by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed that three other individuals were rescued from the scene. The accident, near the University of Lagos waterfront on the way to Iyana-Oworonsoki, was promptly attended to by LASTMA officers.
Despite ongoing efforts to educate drivers on adhering to speed limits, Mr. Giwa expressed disappointment that many drivers still disregard the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. He urged both commercial and private drivers to maintain safe speeds on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads in Lagos State.
The deceased was taken away by officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and LASTMA worked to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow on the bridge. Mr. Giwa extended his sympathies to the deceased’s family and emphasized the crucial importance of road safety.
