A tragic event unfolded in Awka, Anambra State, where suspected gunmen reportedly killed at least nine people near Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in a bold attack.
The incident took place at approximately 10 a.m. in Ifite-Awka, near the university’s school gate area.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers arrived in two vehicles and started firing indiscriminately, creating chaos in the vicinity.
Some locals characterized the incident as a conflict linked to cult activity, while another source indicated that the attackers’ methods were similar to those of Biafra activists.
Caught in the crossfire, several bystanders were struck by bullets, resulting in more casualties.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer for Anambra State Police, confirmed the incident. He stated that a response team had secured the scene by 9:15 a.m., and investigations are ongoing to determine both the motive behind the attack and those responsible for the killings.
Ikenga stated, “Initial reports indicate that the armed men began shooting indiscriminately without provocation. Several bullets fatally struck four individuals in the area, and they were promptly taken to the hospital by police officers for assistance.”
Additionally, several empty bullet shells have been found at the scene. Operations are currently underway in the area, and further details will be provided soon.
