An Uber driver in Osun State tragically commits suicide, reportedly due to overwhelming societal and family pressure to get married, sparking conversations on mental health and cultural expectations.

In a tragic event, Muftau Abiodun Musa, a 46-year-old Uber driver, has reportedly died by suicide in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.

Sources familiar with the situation indicate that ongoing family pressure to marry might have influenced his tragic decision.

Reports indicate that Musa left a note asking whoever discovered his remains to access his phone for more information. In the note, he stressed that anyone could contact his family without hesitation and requested that no one mourn his death.

Musa, who was unmarried and childless, had been grappling with depression for five years. According to the source, his mental health struggles were intensified by ongoing pressure from his family to settle down and begin a family of his own.

This was not his first attempt to end his life. In December 2023, Musa allegedly attempted to hang himself but was rescued by neighbors. Soon after, he tried again by ingesting insecticide and pesticide, leading to a two-month hospitalization.

After his recovery, Musa moved in with his mother to be under closer supervision. However, the constant pressure from his family to marry and have children reportedly became too much for him, prompting him to move out.

According to the source, while searching for a new house, someone sublet one of her rooms to him. He has been living there since May 2024.

The lease on the house ended in December, but he was allowed to stay until the end of January because the owner planned to renovate.

“The individual who subleased the house informed him three days ago that he needed to find a new place, as the owner had instructed them to vacate. This news led him into depression, and tragically, he took his own life.”

According to the source, the Osun State Police Command has assumed responsibility for handling the issue.
