Trader sentenced to one year in prison for accepting stolen water pump

Salim Sulaiman, a 32-year-old businessman, was given a one-year jail sentence by an Area Court in Jos on Monday for purchasing a stolen water pump.

Following his guilty plea to the case, Sulaiman was sentenced by Judge Shawomi Bokkos.

However, Bokkos ordered him to pay an additional N10,000 as compensation to the plaintiff and offered him the alternative of paying a N50,000 fine.

Prior to this, the prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the complainant, Bashir Musa, had reported the case on August 14 at the “C” Division Police station.

The prosecutor stated that the offender purchased the pilfered machine from individuals who pilfered from the complainant’s residence.

According to Gokwat, the offence was against the Plateau Penal Code.
