The Labour Party’s Mr. Peter Obi has expressed sympathy to the people of the Trademore Estate in Lugbe, Abuja, over the flooding tragedy that cost lives and millions of Naira’s worth of property.

Obi called the occurrence a great catastrophe and said it was extremely tragic.

At least four people were killed by the flood, and it also wrecked a number of homes in the Trademore Estate.

Obi praised the Federal Ministry of Environment-Flood Department, the Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Fire Service, and FCT FEMA for doing their utmost to ease the situation in a statement shared on his verified Twitter account on Saturday.

But he added that a long-term fix for the estate’s persistent water problem is still required.

The previous governor of Anambra State emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid so that the locals can resume their regular lifestyles.

The statement said, “The flooding tragedy at Trademore Estate in Lugbe, Abuja, which has led to the loss of life and properties valued at millions of Naira is a tremendous disaster and is extremely distressing. According to reports, the estate had seen similar situations in the past.

“While I appreciate the efforts made to help by NEMA, the Fire Service, FCT FEMA, the Red Cross, and the Federal Ministry of Environment-Flood Department, a long-term solution must still be found to the persistent flooding problem in that region of the country’s capital city, I say.

To lessen the fatal effects of floods in this and other flood-prone locations nationwide, lasting preventive safety measures must be used. Weather scientists have routinely issued warnings about these flooding incidents earlier in the year.

“Urgent humanitarian aid must be given to the citizens of the evacuation zones in the meantime. To allow them to continue living their usual lives, accommodations, supplies for relief efforts, and medical attention should be made available.

“My sympathy is extended to everyone impacted by this unfortunate flooding incident.”

May God bring the deceased eternal rest and solace to the displaced and to everyone whose lives have been impacted by this tragic occurrence.
