Tinubu’s victory: Cardinal Onaiyekan says the court is taking too long to rule on Atiku and Obi’s petitions
It is unfortunate that the Presidential Election Tribunal is taking so long to rule on cases contesting the win of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President-elect, according to John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the former archbishop of the Archdiocese of Abuja.
This information was provided by Cardinal Onaiyekan on Thursday during a Channels Television Interview that Obasanjonews24 was watching.
Recall that Tinubu won the presidential election with more than 8 million votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
However, Tinubu’s victory is being contested in court by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
It was recently stated by the court that it would begin on Monday, May 8.
The Archbishop, however, took issue with the tribunal’s start-up delay.
But he continued by saying that he is still awaiting the court’s ruling on who won the election.
“The election is still ongoing. There are court matters that have not yet been resolved. Because of this, we are in an unusual scenario where the court is handling a challenge to the election of a President-elect who has already been sworn in.
“I have the right to assert that I am still awaiting the court’s decision on the election’s outcome.
“I am one of those who has been arguing that swearing in persons while they are still in court does not make much sense.
In order to have a winner who will be sworn in and who everyone will support, we must evaluate the electoral procedure.
It is unfortunate that the Court is taking so long to decide this case, he added, adding that he is neither a legal expert nor a judge.
The 2023 presidential election was held on February 25th, and it has been more than 65 days since then.
