Tinubu Withdraws from 2024 UN General Assembly, Vice President Shettima to Represent Nigeria

President Tinubu has pulled out of the 2024 UN General Assembly, delegating Vice President Shettima to represent Nigeria at the global event. Learn more about the decision and upcoming discussions.

This year, President Bola Tinubu has decided not to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York.

According to a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been appointed by Tinubu to lead Nigeria’s delegation.

“After returning from his trip to China and the United Kingdom, President Tinubu has expressed a desire to shift attention towards domestic issues. He aims at tackling some of Nigeria’s challenges that have been highlighted by the recent catastrophic flooding.”

Vice President Shettima is set to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Assembly in UNGA 79. Apart from this, he will also attend crucial sideline events and hold bilateral meetings.

The UNGA is scheduled to commence from Tuesday, September 24 till Saturday, September 28 in the year of 2024.

This year’s overarching theme is centered on the idea of uniting to ensure that no one is excluded from progress towards lasting peace, sustainable development and respect for human dignity both in current times and future generations.
