The president of the next country has criticised the current political scenario.

President Bola Tinubu will hold a special summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday to discuss the political crisis in Mali.

On Wednesday, armed presidential guards seized power in Niger Republic, detaining President Mohamed Bazoum. The United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, ECOWAS, and the United States have all condemned the situation.

Concerned about the situation, Tinubu, who also serves as ECOWAS Chairman, dispatched the President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, to the West African country known as the most coup-prone in the region.

The President criticised the current political crisis in the adjacent country in a statement issued on Friday by his media adviser, Dele Alake.

He also promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do all possible to safeguard democracy and guarantee that democratic government is firmly entrenched in the sub-region.

“Following the coup in the Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West African country, President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will host a special meeting of the regional leaders on Sunday, July 30th in Abuja,” the statement said.

“President Tinubu, as Chairman of ECOWAS, condemned the current political situation in the neighbouring country and promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.”

Earlier, US Vice President Kamala Harris and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres both expressed strong support for Nigeria’s efforts to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
