President Bola Ahmed Tinubu served as Seun Kuti’s political mentor, according to the Grammy-nominated afrobeat musician.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the son of the late afrobeat superstar Fela Kuti discussed his relationship with the president and revealed this information.

He emphasised that the president was a mentor to him growing up and that he has a “robust” relationship with him, referring to him as a “uncle.”

He remembered that Tinubu was a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which campaigned for Nigeria’s democracy after the military threw out Chief MKO Abiola’s presumed victory in the presidential election of June 12, 1993.

Kuti declared, “My relationship with President Tinubu is very strong on a personal level. He was an uncle to me when I was young. He and uncle Beko [Kuti] were close friends. When I was younger, he served as my political mentor.

“These folks taught me many of the concepts that I now comprehend when I was a young child. Knowing they continued to work with NADECO to promote democracy in our nation even after Tinubu went into exile… These men struggled for our democracy: Wale Soyinka, Uncle Beko, Asiwaju.

I sang at every rally Tinubu attended during his first term as governor of Lagos State. He and I have always been great friends. But I don’t interact with him politically in any way. Even then, I don’t believe anyone should care. I haven’t visited his home in years, unless I need to meet him over a national matter.
