Tinubu Urged to Sack EFCC Chairman Olukoyede

David Akinyemi

President Tinubu has been urged to sack EFCC Chairman Olukoyede. Find out the reasons behind these calls and what could happen next.

Due to an alleged attempt on the life of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the former governor of the state, the Kogi State House of Assembly has demanded that Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), be removed from office.

The lawmakers denounced what they called the EFCC’s “unprovoked attack” on the Kogi State Government Lodge during a plenary session in Lokoja on Monday, calling it an attack on the people of Kogi and the present governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo.

The MPs declared that the EFCC was trying to kill Kogi State’s governors, both past and present.

This comes after the anti-graft agency reportedly conducted a search on the Kogi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja with the intention of apprehending Bello, who had been listed as wanted in relation to a purported N80.2 billion scam.

The motion’s leader, Hon. Akus Lawal, charged that the EFCC was attempting to disgrace and possibly even hurt the governors.

The motion was endorsed by several legislators, among them Hon. Abu Jibril, who demanded that Olukoyede be charged with anything pertaining to the purported attempt on his life.

The assembly pushed on Olukoyede’s immediate dismissal as EFCC chairman while also endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic initiatives.

The resolution they came to was as follows: “The EFCC has fully marinated in a sense of its own importance and power and now considers itself not only above the law but unanswerable to anyone or institution for its actions. This is demonstrated by the unprovoked attack on the Governor’s Lodge and the firing of live rounds within a diplomatic residential zone.”

“The House has resolved that the President should relieve the EFCC Chairman of his appointment with immediate effect and replace him with a competent officer who will give Mr. President’s crusade for the rule of law the needed effectiveness,” the lawmakers demanded in their resolution. This was because the Chairman had repeatedly displayed gross incompetence.

“The unlawful conducts of the EFCC show that the chairman’s intention is not to arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello, but to ridicule the state,” stated Hon. Yahaya Umar, who represents Omala State Constituency.

“The timeline of events demonstrates that the chairman’s issue is not with the alleged offenses, but rather with their desire to bring Kogi State and the defendant into disgrace.”

The State House of Assembly’s Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Comfort Nwuchiola Egwaba, declared, “The EFCC is simply attempting to damage the former Governor’s reputation through their media trial.” In this battle, the EFCC is not being sincere. The state’s population as a whole, especially the women, are part of its objective.
