The Geospatial Data Repository and an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System are scheduled to be unveiled by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

This was said on Monday during a pre-launch briefing in Abuja by National Population Commission Chairman Nasir Kwarra.

Initiating the e-CRVS under Tinubu shows “the current government’s and leadership’s commitment to strengthen civil registration data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination, and timely access to statistics on vital events in the country,” claims Kwarra.

“In an effort to meet the Sustainable Development Goal, it intends to expedite Nigeria’s enhanced vital statistics and civil registration systems over a ten-year period, from 2023 to 2030.”

The commission’s chairman reported that the organisation, working with the UN Children’s Fund, produced the eCRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report, which demonstrated the potential of digital technologies to bring about revolutionary changes in CRVS and to integrate data from various systems to safely store data at scale and affordably in Nigeria.

By creating a Public-Private Partnership between the Commission and Barnksforte Technologies Limited, the report marked the beginning of the Commission’s audacious creation of the eCRVS (Vital Reg) system.

“The chairman clarified that the purpose of the PPP arrangement is to advance the Vital Reg System as a fully digital system that digitises all civil registrations, including birth registration, stillbirth registration, birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration, and death.”

He mentioned the system’s provision of a digital certificate in every situation, an easily available platform for verification for registered organisations, and a dashboard-style central management system that illustrates and evaluates compiled civil registration data into crucial statistics for appropriate decision-making.

The speaker went on, “This procedure represents a radical shift from the conventional paper-based documentation of significant occurrences to an advanced digital system that complies with global best standards. This electronic CRVS has the potential to completely transform the nation’s methods for tracking, recording, and analysing important events.

In addition, it should be mentioned that NPC used a “cutting edge” technological methodology to map the country using geospatial data that covered a multidimensional theme and covered the entire country using a Geographic Information System in order to prepare for Nigeria’s first digital census.

The President of Nigeria will also unveil this repository database for usage by the country’s public and private sectors. Additionally, Mr. President will establish the CRVS National Coordination Committee.
