Tinubu Reveals How He Confronted Babangida Over Failed Historic Leadership

President Bola Tinubu has shared how he boldly confronted former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, telling him he failed to make history during his time in power.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recounted a time when he challenged former military President Ibrahim Babangida, accusing him of missing an opportunity to make history.
During a book launch held in Babangida’s honor on Thursday, Tinubu shared his frustration with the repeated delays of the inauguration for elected officials back in 1992, when he secured a Senate seat representing Lagos West.
Babangida, the ruler of Nigeria between 1985 and 1993, is well-known for canceling the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was widely regarded as having been won by the late Moshood Abiola.
Tinubu admitted that his daring challenge to the military leader left him afraid of being imprisoned, yet he remained steadfast.
I challenged you, pointing out that you had a chance to make history that day, but you didn’t seize it. Why not inaugurate us? Why are we being asked to return later and delay the inauguration?
“They believed I would land in jail. You spoke up just as the comment concluded, and you profoundly impacted me. That moment is unforgettable,” Tinubu said to an applauding crowd.
The President also praised the former head of state for his contributions to nation-building, sharing how Babangida inspired him in politics.
Tinubu expressed gratitude by saying, “Without your support, individuals like me wouldn’t be involved in politics. Your progressive movement advocating for the inclusion of young and talented people inspires many of us.”
In his comments, Babangida provided an explanation for why he nullified the June 12 presidential election.
Thirty-two years after the election, Babangida stated that his actions were taken to safeguard the country’s interests.
