By 2025, President Bola Tinubu demands that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) increase the number of modern hostels in Nigerian tertiary institutions from 36 to 72.
The objective of this initiative is to enhance students’ living standards and guarantee a consistent scholarly atmosphere.
During a meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students, Sonny Echono- the Executive Secretary of TETFund disclosed this directive. According to a statement by TETFund, aligning with the president’s wider objective to promote industrial harmony in tertiary institutions informed this decision.
“The significance of protecting public assets on campuses during the upcoming nationwide protests was emphasized in a statement signed by AbdulMumin Oniyangi, Director of Public Affairs for TETFund.
Additionally, Echono stressed the importance of maintaining a predictable academic schedule and mentioned that the president is dedicated to enabling students to finish their studies without interruptions.”

Beginning this year, TETFund commenced the development of 36 contemporary lodging amenities according to Echono’s declaration.
This number will increase to 72 next year as a result of Presidential orders. The progress on these projects varies with certain initiatives being implemented through collaborations between the government and private institutions.
Furthermore, Echono brought up the concern regarding campus transportation and put forth a plan to collaborate with relevant organizations in converting current buses to CNG.
Moreover, they proposed introducing mass transit buses for students as part of TETFund’s 2025 initiatives.
Echono voiced his unease about the enormous electricity expenses that certain universities bear, which can escalate to as much as N400 million monthly when addressing the power obstacles in tertiary institutions.
He disclosed that TETFund is collaborating with the Ministry of Power for viable and cost-effective means aimed at ensuring dependable access to electricity on university premises.
Moreover, the president has instructed for prompt settlement of salary arrears owed to Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) that stretch up to four months.
