President Tinubu has officially administered the oath of office to Kekere-Ekun, marking his appointment as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), a significant milestone in the country’s judicial leadership.
On Monday, September 30, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally inaugurated Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) during a ceremony at the Council Chambers in Abuja’s Presidential Villa.
Kekere-Ekun was born on May 7, 1958, in London, United Kingdom. She embarked on her legal journey at the University of Lagos and earned her law degree there in 1980.
After completing her studies at the Nigeria Law School, she was called to the Nigerian Bar on July 10, 1981. She then advanced her academic journey by attending the London School of Economics, where she earned a Master of Laws degree in 1983.

Kekere-Ekun’s distinguished judicial career commenced as a Senior Magistrate II in the Lagos State Judiciary. From 1996 to 1999, she also served as the chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal for Zone II in Ikeja.
In 2004, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal. By July 2013, she advanced to the distinguished role of Justice on the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
In 2022, her substantial contributions to the Nigerian judiciary were acknowledged when former President Muhammadu Buhari awarded her the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Following her appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kekere-Ekun is poised to bring her extensive experience and unwavering dedication to the nation’s highest judicial position. This marks a historic milestone for the Nigerian judiciary.
