President Tinubu honors the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Taoreed Lagbaja, by directing that the national flag be flown at half-mast. Read about the tributes and national mourning for his service.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the passing of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who died following a short illness.

The former COAS passed away at the age of 56.

In a statement released on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, it was announced that the President has ordered national flags to be flown at half mast across the country for seven days in honor of the late Army Chief.

He deeply valued the contributions of the departed to the nation and extended his wishes for strength to their family during this difficult time.

Earlier, Tinubu announced the passing of the Chief of Army Staff.

Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, held the position of Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months after being appointed by President Tinubu in June 2023.

He started his military career by enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. On September 19, 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, joining as part of the 39th Regular Course.

Lt. General Lagbaja also held the position of platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

He was instrumental in a variety of internal security operations, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity spanning Kaduna and Niger States.

A graduate of the esteemed U.S. Army War College, he obtained a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, showcasing his commitment to professional development and excellence in military leadership.

Lt. General Lagbaja is remembered by his cherished wife, Mariya, and their two children.
