President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pays tribute to former Nigerian leader Yakubu Gowon on his 90th birthday, acknowledging his significant contributions to the nation and his meritorious service during his time in office.
President Bola Tinubu has penned a tribute to retired General Yakubu Gowon, the former military head of state, in honor of his 90th birthday celebration.
In a statement signed by the president on Saturday, the elder statesman was described as an extraordinarily distinguished gentleman.
On October 19th, as he celebrates his 90th birthday, I offer a heartfelt tribute to General Yakubu Gowon, our esteemed elder statesman and former head of state.
General Gowon is an exceptional gentleman and one of Nigeria’s longest-serving leaders.
He made significant contributions to our country and served with distinction in various roles both within the military and beyond.
As a brilliant officer trained at Sandhurst who reluctantly became Nigeria’s leader at the age of 32, his life story has been an inspiration to many Nigerians.
As the nation’s leader, he played a crucial role in nation-building and development, earning him the title of the father of national infrastructure.
It is documented that following the country’s civil war, his philosophy of “No victor, no vanquished” played a significant role in fostering national healing, peace, and reconciliation.
His most remarkable legacy was the establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975.
Ever since I took office as President, General Gowon has been my advisor, providing guidance whenever required.
He supported us during a disagreement with some Sahelian states, urging moderation from all parties to preserve ECOWAS unity.
General Gowon’s life beyond his official duties is equally noteworthy. Following his leadership of the country, he pursued further education, showing that age and status should never prevent us from striving to reach our full potential.
General Gowon has continued his “Nigeria Prays” initiative, focusing on prayer and intercession for the nation while advocating for religious tolerance, peace, harmony, and stability throughout the country.
This further demonstrates his belief in the unity and solidarity of Nigeria.
We express our gratitude to General Gowon for his leadership and dedicated service to Nigeria.
His exemplary conduct continues to serve as a guiding light of hope and inspiration for those of us in government, motivating us to give our all for our cherished nation.
We will keep valuing his wisdom and insightful guidance.
“I hope that God Almighty blesses General Gowon with greater wisdom, good health, and more years to remain a valuable asset to Nigeria and humanity,” President Tinubu expressed in writing.
