President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to the champions of democracy during the 25 years of continuous democratic governance in Nigeria.
In his address on Democracy Day, June 12, 2024, he commended various pro-democracy figures, both living and deceased.
Tinubu acknowledged the efforts of these heroes and heroines, many of whom perished in the struggle.
He emphasized that their selfless dedication and sacrifices can never be fully repaid or forgotten. Tinubu specifically mentioned individuals like Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and Pa Alfred Rewane, who made significant sacrifices for the nation’s democratic cause.
He also highlighted the contributions of other prominent figures like Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Professor Wole Soyinka, and many more, urging that their legacies should be honored and remembered. Additionally, Tinubu acknowledged the role of the press and Nigerian journalists in upholding democracy in the country.
Nigeria Must Persevere with Democracy
Despite the challenges faced 25 years after transitioning from military rule to civilian governance, it is imperative for Nigeria to persist with the choice of democracy. The President emphasized the gravity of the decision the nation made a quarter of a century ago, highlighting the need to continue on this path.
The President cautioned against the presence of anti-democratic forces that may exploit current challenges to undermine or even dismantle the democracy that has been hard-fought for. These forces seek to exert control and dominance over others, disregarding the well-being of the people.
A former NADECO chief, Tinubu, acknowledged himself as a direct beneficiary of democracy and pledged to safeguard fundamental human rights and uphold democratic principles. Having played a role in the birth of democracy, he expressed his commitment to preserving this precious form of governance and protecting the rights, freedoms, and liberties of Nigerian citizens.
Since its return to democracy in 1999, Nigeria has celebrated Democracy Day on May 29th each year, commemorating the ideals of democracy throughout the Fourth Republic. In 2018, the President moved Democracy Day to June 12th to honor a national hero.
