A directive from President Bola Tinubu mandates the downsizing of Nigeria’s official delegation for the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, set to take place in September.

During a retreat held in Abuja on Saturday, the Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila communicated that the directive was issued as stated by Ajuri Ngelale, who is Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity.

The heads of government agencies under the State House management’s oversight were invited to attend a retreat arranged by them.

Gbajabiamila stressed that the delegation for the 79th session of the UNGA should only include officials who have indispensable roles.

As a part of its wider actions towards resource management and cost-cutting in governance, this determination has been made by the administration.

In his speech, Gbajabiamila emphasized the significance of complying with legal statutes, regulations as well as presidential directives when carrying out government duties. He hinted that additional policy declarations would be forthcoming to boost efficiency in governmental procedures.

According to Gbajabiamila, “The President was briefed on this today and we will be trying out this policy during the UNGA in New York over the next few weeks. Considering recent conversations revolving around reducing governance costs, there is a strong desire to observe whether Nigeria will send an extensive delegation once again.”

According to Gbajabiamila, the government will enforce strict measures this time. “The President has explicitly directed that individuals without official business at the UN General Assembly should refrain from traveling to the United States,” he emphasized.

The Chief of Staff emphasized to the agency leaders the importance of following this directive and acknowledged that President Tinubu is mindful of Nigerian citizens’ anxieties and dedicated to resolving them efficiently.

The aim of the retreat, according to Gbajabiamila, was to promote collaboration and coordination among government agencies under State House supervision. Ultimately, this initiative would help achieve President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda objectives.

He emphasized the importance of coordination in achieving government success and meeting Nigerian citizens’ expectations. He also stated that this retreat would become a routine practice to guarantee ongoing enhancement in governance.

He urged the State House management and agency heads to set a precedent by adhering strictly to laws and regulations such as the Public Procurement Act, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, Finance Act among others.

The underlying focus of the retreat was to enhance institutional mechanisms for efficient service delivery.
