Tinubu directs 10% of humanitarian efforts to be reserved for senior persons

President Bola Tinubu reportedly gave his minister for humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, the order to set aside 10% of social safety net interventions for senior citizens.

This was said in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by her media assistant, Mr. Rasheed Zubair.

The minister was reportedly addressing at a stakeholders’ gathering to celebrate Nigeria’s 2023 National Day of Older Persons.

“Mr. President has ordered that 10% of social safety net intervention programmes in the nation should be set aside for older people, according to my ministry.

“Senior citizens’ rights in the fields of employment security, health, means of subsistence, agriculture, and other development planning must be taken into account.

According to current estimates, there are 14.8 million older people in the country. As a result, the president ordered that older people be included in all social welfare programmes.

Edu gave the elderly people assurances about the federal government’s commitment to giving them the assistance they need to improve the quality of their lives.

The President further ordered that individuals who live in poverty be helped and included in social intervention activities.

Since we will be helping senior citizens who are impacted by humanitarian situations, she stated, “We would launch two of such social intervention programmes with a focus on senior citizens.”
