Presidential hopeful Tinubu makes a bold statement about self-reliance, declaring he doesn’t need government money to fuel his ambitions, underscoring his commitment to financial independence.

President Bola Tinubu has stated that he is not focused on generating personal wealth from his position in government.

During a meeting with the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, chaired by former Senate President Ken Nnamani, the President emphasized that his purpose in office is to serve the nation rather than seek personal enrichment.

“I did not enter this role to pursue financial gain or take advantage of the circumstances; my intention is to work diligently. I sought your votes, and the Nigerian people granted them to me,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The gathering included 16 former presiding officers, comprising past Senate presidents, former House of Representatives speakers, and former deputy leaders of both chambers.

As a former Senator himself, the President acknowledged the support and encouragement he has received from the Forum members, regardless of their political affiliations, and urged them to continue promoting unity and cooperation to achieve the nation’s developmental objectives.

In discussing the intricate nature of legislative processes, constitutional amendments, and nation-building efforts, the President expressed his belief that Nigeria can advance through collaboration and inclusivity.

“Despite past political differences and current challenges, you continue to have faith in me and our collective vision for this country.

“I am deeply grateful; no one can accomplish this better than us. I have traveled extensively and observed how developed nations have achieved progress through collaboration, inclusivity, and sound financial practices.

“Indeed, we face hardships, but how did we arrive at this point? What actions did we take when our crude oil production was at its peak?”

“We overlooked our communities; we neglected the very resources that sustain us; we failed to provide them with a decent standard of living.

“We also neglected the education of our children. Take a moment to visit our dilapidated schools. The learning environment must be conducive enough to inspire students to engage in their education.”

It is easy to lament the persistently low school enrollment figures, yet we must reflect on whether we have taken any steps to promote the enrollment process. This introspection is essential, as it pertains to our moral responsibility, he stated.

The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to tackling these issues, which include enhancing infrastructure, adhering to financial regulations, investigating alternative energy solutions, and ensuring energy security.

“We have made significant progress, and I assure you that we will strive to do our utmost,” he remarked.

He encouraged former presiding officers to continue imparting their extensive knowledge in nation-building and governance, highlighting their unique ability to provide “clear insights into our current situation” to the Nigerian populace.

Senator Nnamani, representing the delegation, expressed unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration and its initiatives to confront Nigeria’s urgent challenges.

He acknowledged that this meeting marked the President’s first official interaction with the group since taking office and extended his congratulations to the President.

“Mr. President, history is not the burden of a single individual; however, some are called to bear a significant portion of its challenges.

“Although these issues are not of your making, it is now your responsibility to address the widespread insecurity plaguing the nation, the economic decline that has led to hunger and discontent, the deterioration of infrastructure due to years of neglect, and numerous other national issues.

“Despite the complexity of these challenges, we have faith that your experience will enable you to confront and overcome them.

“What inspires us further is the determination you demonstrated in addressing the matter of local government autonomy, which has garnered you respect from both supporters and critics.

“We are confident that you will delve deeper to eliminate these challenges and restore Nigeria’s esteemed position among the nations of the world,” the former Senate President concluded.

He stated that the group has observed the consequences of elite complacency on nations and has committed to coming together across all divisions to provide any necessary support for nation-building and to ensure lasting prosperity for our citizens.

“In this context and in the interest of the nation, we express our commitment to support your efforts in restoring national security, creating an inclusive economy, and fostering unity among our diverse populations,” he remarked.
