Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo at 88, Calls Him ‘Sometimes Controversial’

President Tinubu honors former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, acknowledging his impactful yet sometimes controversial leadership.
President Bola Tinubu, while celebrating former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 88th birthday, referred to him as “controversial” and praised his contributions to nation-building.
In a statement signed on Wednesday, Tinubu also praised the former statesman as an “extraordinary leader” whose contributions to Nigeria’s development are unforgettable.
Tinubu believes that Obasanjo’s frequent involvement in national matters, while occasionally contentious, has contributed to shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.
Former President Obasanjo’s frequent and occasionally controversial involvement in national affairs has influenced public policies and served as a check on leadership.
“At 88, the former president continues to grow stronger. I pray that God Almighty grants him many more years so both our nation and Africa can keep benefiting from his wisdom and insight,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s statesmanship and his commitment to national unity, peace, and progress. He also offered prayers for the former leader’s continued strength and wisdom.
According to Tinubu, the former President retains significant influence in both national and international affairs. He also referred to Obasanjo as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter,” highlighting that his efforts in conflict resolution and governance advocacy have garnered him respect throughout Africa and beyond.
Recalling Obasanjo’s crucial involvement in concluding the Nigerian Civil War, the President mentioned that as a colonel in the Nigerian Army, he accepted the surrender instrument from Biafran Army Commander Col. Philip Effiong in 1970.
Tinubu also praised Obasanjo’s leadership after the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, applauding his dedication to democracy by managing a transition to civilian rule in 1979.
General Obasanjo carried out essential policies and reforms, making significant decisions that deeply influenced the lives of many Nigerians. As head of state, he consistently showed a selfless dedication to national unity, peace, and progress.
He stated that even out of office, few would deny the former president’s significant influence among the domestic political elite and his high regard internationally as a global peace ambassador and troubleshooter. His unwavering commitment to resolving conflicts, promoting good governance, and supporting Pan-Africanism through institutions like the African Union and the United Nations exemplifies his statesmanship.
