In an effort to revitalise the flagging economy of the country and restore the days when the naira was valued equally to the dollar and other western currencies, President Bola Tinubu asked Nigerians on Saturday for their prayers and support.
He emphasised that his administration has set out to restore and revitalise the country while guaranteeing the safety of people and property.
At the 47th Convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Tinubu made this statement.
The President, through Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman, stated that his administration places a high value on education and that nothing would quell Nigerian children’s desire for a top-notch education.
In order to prevent other West African nations from plotting coups, the President also urged allies to back the nation’s developing democracy.
Speaking to the graduates, Tinubu said: “We humbly ask for your prayers, support, and cooperation as this administration sets out on a momentous journey to rebuild the nation, revive the economy, unite the people, and right the wrongs of the past. And with God’s grace, we will steer this nation’s ship into a secure port. In order for Nigeria to serve as a positive example for other coup-planning countries in the West African subregion and throughout Africa, our fledgling democracy needs to be supported.
“We are doing everything within our power to restore the good old days when our currency was comfortably on par with its peers in the western nations,” the President continued. This government is committed to protecting people’s lives and property while also reviving our economy. This implies that nations and businesses that make investments in innovation, research, and education have a better chance of succeeding in the global economy.
For our graduates to be competitive in a world that is always evolving, we must keep funding research and education. I want to reassure you that the government’s strategy for bolstering the educational system will be comprehensive. We will make greater investments in education across the board and work to reposition Nigeria to be more competitive internationally. We’ll talk about some of the underlying reasons for trade union strikes and the needless time waste that results for colleges and other postsecondary institutions. We have started a student loan programme and will make sure it runs well.
His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe, the university’s chancellor, congratulated the graduating students and urged them to contribute to solving the problems facing the nation in his speech.
In his remarks, the institution’s vice chancellor, professor Adebayo Simeon, implored the federal government to make sure the institution’s power project is not shelved.
