The N35,000 pay award for civil servants has been approved by President Bola Tinubu in order to mitigate the effects of the elimination of fuel subsidies.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ekpo U. O. Nta, revealed this in a memo.
According to the memo, all Federal Civil Servants would benefit from the wage award starting on September 1, 2023.
The memo, dated October 19, 2023, was sent to the President’s chief of staff, deputy chief of staff, ministers and secretaries of state, the secretary to the government of the federation, the head of the federation’s civil service, the chairmen of federal commissions, the federal permanent secretaries, the clerk of the national assembly, the secretary to the national judicial council and the secretary to the federal judicial service commission.

Directors-General and Chief Executives of Parastatals, Agencies, and Government-Owned Corporations, as well as the Federation’s Auditor-General, Accountant-General, and Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, are also included in the memo.

The Nigerian Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and other organised labour unions launched an industrial action in response to the hardships brought on by the termination of the fuel subsidy, as reported by OBASANJO NEWS24.
After the Tinubu-led administration promised N5 billion for the provision of palliatives to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, the strike was subsequently put on hold for one month.
