Tinubu advised me to step down from the Senate presidency so that Akpabio could succeed Umahi.
In order to make way for Senator Godswill Akpabio in the contest for the 10th Senate presidency, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi claimed that President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu persuaded him to resign.
The Governor made this statement in an interview with reporters on Monday after arriving at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Onueke, Ebonyi.
In order to protect the interests of the South-East region and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Umahi said that he had discussed his run for the Senate presidency with Tinubu.
“When the President-elect was in Paris, we spoke about the subject, and he invited me to meet him when he arrived home.
Tinubu told me that he had made commitments, and it was an honor to be invited. As the incoming president, he is within his rights to do so, just as everyone else who seeks election to the position does.
In order to avoid getting in the way of his advancement, I agreed.
He explained his decision to quit by saying that politics is all about dialogue, give and take, and that we cannot keep opposing each other on every issue.
“The South-East zone will get a tangible position considering our efforts to promote the All Progressives Congress, APC,” he declared.
