Timi Dakolo Reflects: ‘My Car Used to Embarrass My Wife’
Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo shares a heartfelt story about his humble beginnings, recalling how his car once embarrassed his wife, highlighting his journey to success.
Renowned vocalist Timi Dakolo has revealed the story of how he met his wife, Busola.
The singer of “Iyawo mi” shared that he first met his wife at church, emphasizing that she was not initially interested in a romantic relationship with him. However, he remained persistent.
He explained that she used to feel embarrassed whenever he picked her up in the branded Picanto he had won from the first season of Idols West Africa back in 2007.
In a recent interview with Pulse, Dakolo shared that he first met his wife at church. He approached her and requested she accompany him to a ball as his date. She gave him her phone number but didn’t answer when he called. Determined, Dakolo frequently visited the area in hopes of encountering her again. One day they crossed paths, and upon asking why she hadn’t been answering his calls, she explained that her phone had been stolen.
I empathized with her, and we developed a friendship. Over time, I began to have deeper feelings for her; however, she was inclined to keep things strictly platonic while I wanted more. Determinedly, I worked hard to win her affection. During this period, I’d drive her back and forth from work in the branded Picanto that I had won from Nigerian Idols—a car that initially made me feel self-conscious when picking her up because it seemed inadequate by others’ standards. But my mindset shifted as optimism took hold: “I’ll surprise you,” became my motivating mantra against skepticism or rejection—and eventually—I succeeded!
The singer married Busola in 2012, and since then they have had three children together.
