Timaya reveals in a candid interview that he shares a unique ‘craziness’ with fellow Nigerian artist Portable, comparing their wild energy and personalities.
Singer Timaya has shown appreciation for Portable, noting the similarities in their vibrant and unpredictable personalities.
In a recent interview with Channels Television, Timaya looked back on his past, admitting to having had a reputation as a troublemaker and attributing much of his success to this unconventional approach.
He mentioned, “That’s why I like Portable. When he first emerged on the scene, I told 2face about him while we were traveling to Delta State. I asked if he’d heard of that guy Portable—Zazu Zeh—and said he’s just like me because I was a crazy guy too.”
The singer admitted that although today’s Gen Z audience might view him as “unproblematic,” they may not be aware of the wilder side of his early career.
“These Gen Z folks sometimes get it wrong. When I talk, some people think I’m unproblematic and say, ‘Timaya minds his business.’ I just look at them thinking if they only knew the real me back then. I’ve calmed down now; before, I was wild—really wild—and intense like fire. But there’s been growth over time. Back in those days, being that way was a strategy for me,” he shared.
He also dispelled a rumor from the beginning of his career, stating that an alleged negative incident with military personnel never occurred.
He stated, “The story about me having a negative encounter with military personnel is false. Why would I get involved with them?”
I’m not trying to criticize or disrespect anyone, but whatever you do, it’s important to use wisdom and common sense.
Regardless of how outrageous I seemed, it was all part of a plan, even with my craziness. I made an impact in the industry because when everyone else was singing love songs, coming from the Niger Delta meant I didn’t present myself as just another romantic singer.
