On Monday, the Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal in Isabo, Abeokuta began hearing the petition lodged by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu against All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Dapo Abiodun.
According to a DAILY POST correspondent, both the APC and the PDP mobilized their members to attend the tribunal in a show of solidarity.
However, political goons invaded the venue of the tribunal with canes, also known as pankere, and attacked perceived opponents as police officers and other security personnel looked on.
The police blocked both ends of the road leading to the courthouse, but that did not prevent the criminals from attacking their targets.
As political goons with canes wandered the streets, the police made no attempt to apprehend or stop them from causing mayhem.
A police officer stated, “There is nothing we can do; we are unable to arrest them. Everything about Ogun is constantly unique.”
A PDP member who was attacked by the goons reported losing his phone, money, and other valuables during the beating.
As of the time this report was filed, PDP members had departed the courthouse to avoid further attacks.
After each election, the Daily Post reports that attacks on opposition members at the tribunal have become a hazardous trend in Ogun.
