Three South African Soldiers Killed in DR Congo Clashes
Three South African soldiers have lost their lives in ongoing clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
The South African National Defence Union (SANDU) announced in a statement on Saturday that three South African soldiers lost their lives and at least 14 others were injured during combat in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday.
According to two sources from the Congolese army, forces in eastern Congo successfully thwarted an attempted night-time assault by rebels.
An anonymous army officer reported that the rebels attacked the defenses using heavy weapons, which led to a military response.
“We halted their progress and are preventing them from reaching Goma,” the officer stated.
The situation has not been addressed publicly by the Congolese government or military.
The recent escalation has prompted the United Nations to warn about the potential for a wider regional war. The Congo, along with the UN and other countries, has accused neighboring Rwanda of exacerbating the conflict by deploying its troops and supplying weapons. However, Rwanda has denied these accusations.
The military announced on Friday that the governor of North Kivu was killed at the frontlines.
